Atmospheric pollutants--emitted mainly by motor vehicles and industry--dangerously increase the natural acidity in rain. Acid precipitation has a number of harmful effects for plants, soil, and water. Acid rain can also cause acidification of lakes, destroying almost all plant and animal life in them.
