Food safety is the concept that food will not cause harm to the consumer when prepared and/or eaten according to its intended use. In Australia we rely on food safety standards to protect us from foodborne illness and food poisoning caused by poor handling, contamination, storage and temperature issues.
We waste so much food that it’s hard to believe! This contributes to excess consumption of freshwater and fossil fuels. One ton of food waste prevention can save 4.2 tons of CO2 equivalent. Food insecurity and Waste by
Australia is a prosperous country, yet there remains a sizeable portion of the population who lack a regular supply of nutritious and affordable food, either going hungry or relying on assistance from charities and food banks. In the past year alone, more than four million Australians have been in a situation where they have run out of food and have been unable to buy more. Conversely, we also waste a lot of food right through the supply chain; the cost of food waste to the national economy is a staggering $20 billion each year.
Food safety is part of food security
What’s the connection between food safety and food security? Food security means having regular access to enough safe and nutritious food to lead an active and healthy life. That makes food safety an integral part of food security.

Climate Change & Food Security | Explained
Food security refers to the state of having constant access to a nutritious and reliable food supply. This can only be achieved once food is available for a person, they can access it and also use it appropriately. Although it may seem easy to achieve this, 1 in 8 people around the world suffer from food insecurity and are malnourished. One of the major challenges the world is experiencing relating to food security today is climate change.
Organic and genetically modified food by
Increasingly, Australians are caring more about the origins and values of the foods they consume. This book addresses two often misunderstood agricultural production methods - organic and genetically modified food. Organic food is grown and produced without using synthetic chemicals such as pesticides and artificial fertilisers; so what are the actual ethical, environmental and nutritional differences between organic and conventionally-produced food? Are organics healthier?
